Charming Verona

Verona is one of the northern Italy's most attractive cities - a charming little city with a hint of romance in the air. It reminds me a lot of Rome, but in a much more compact scale. I have visited Verona numerous times during summer, but it is absolutely worth a visit also during winter time. In December the city is a captivating experience with decorative Christmas lights, Nativity Scenes and markets.

Verona is best known for its amphitheater Arena di Verona, hosting the city's annual summer opera festival, as well as for the legendary Shakespearean tragedy of Romeo & Juliet. But it is also one of the best preserved historic cities in Italy with its little medieval lanes.

The city is ideal for exploring by foot, since the sights are within walking distance. Verona's historic centre lies within the town walls and offers a great number of churches, museums and other impressive architectural experiences. The medieval castle, Castelvecchio, of the Della Scala family, is considered one of the most important and best preserved artistic sites in Europe.

The regional wine and food from the Veneto area are also worth experiencing. Verona's 'piazzas', squares, are filled with a variety of lovely, appealing cafés and restaurants. The Piazza Erbe and Piazza dei Signori have a much nicer and more local atmosphere than the pricey and touristic Piazza Bra. Since the smaller restaurants and bars are scattered rather secretively, I recommend to be actively curious and wander around the small lanes.

Verona is also a place for exclusive and elegant shopping, Via Mazzini and Corso di Porta Borsari being the main areas. Verona is also a great hub for visiting the nearby Lake Garda or Venice.

Cannot wait to go back again. Verona's charm is simply unique!
