Charming Verona

Image
Verona is one of the northern Italy's most attractive cities - a charming little city with a hint of romance in the air. It reminds me a lot of Rome, but in a much more compact scale. I have visited Verona numerous times during summer, but it is absolutely worth a visit also during winter time. In December the city is a captivating experience with decorative Christmas lights, Nativity Scenes and markets. Verona is best known for its amphitheater Arena di Verona, hosting the city's annual summer opera festival, as well as for the legendary Shakespearean tragedy of Romeo & Juliet. But it is also one of the best preserved historic cities in Italy with its little medieval lanes. The city is ideal for exploring by foot, since the sights are within walking distance. Verona's historic centre lies within the town walls and offers a great number of churches, museums and other impressive architectural experiences. The medieval castle, Castelvecchio, of the Della...

Valencia - an authentic Spanish gem

Image
Valencia is a truly Spanish city with a charming allure of its own. Yet it is a huge city with all the international influences. It has a lot of the same elements as Malaga or Barcelona, but is less touristic. It is a perfect city break option to visit also during winter for its sunny Mediterranean climate. Its labyrinthine old town, Ciutat Vella, has a distinctive mysterical atmosphere. In the old town you will also find the cathedral and the two massive city wall gates, Torres de Serrano ja Torres de Quart, with awesome views over the city.  One of Valencia's most important and also recent attractions (built in 2004) is the Ciutat de les Arts de les Ciències, the City of Arts and Sciences. designed by the famous architect Santiago Calatravan. The Mercado Central is one of the oldest market halls in Europe. Its decorative architecture is worth seeing along its busy and noisy market stands. The food is an important element, in Valencia...

Perfect city break options for winter

Image
Looking for great options for a city break during winter? I know I am. On the top of my own wish list is definitely to visit Venice during winter. Let's see if my dream comes true. December is a magical time to visit cities like Rome or Paris. I could never get tired of walking along the streets of Rome when the city is all lit up and decorated. My favorite areas to walk include the Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps), via del Corso, via dei Coronari, and Piazza Navona. I also enjoy just sitting outside in the heated terraces of the many cafés and restaurants.  The Italian food is always delicious but especially during Christmas time there are some special seasonal delicacies available. T he Vatican's Saint Peters square is one of the prettiest places to be during Christmas, especially its Nativity Scene is worth seeing. The winter sales in Rome begin sometime the first week in January - another good reason to visit the city during winter season. You...
