The gems of Rethymno
In my blog about Chania I promised to share my experiences also about Rethymno in Crete. Well, finally after the couple of hectic work weeks, I found some time for writing.
I must say I absolutely loved the town with its small, clean alleys and historical buildings. Rethymno is actually a lot like Chania but a much more compact version of it.
Since I love to treat myself with little luxuries, I opted to stay in Rimondi Boutique Hotels, in the heart of the old town of Rethymno. What a perfect choice it was! Among my best stays ever, and I have seen some pretty amazing 5-star hotels around the globe. Absolute serenity and privacy surrounded by old historical premises taking you back to the days of Renaissance - a unique balance between the old and the new.
The services feature along the outdoor pools and jacuzzi, also a nice hammam and spa. The entire atmosphere is elegant, yet sophisticatedly laid-back. All is culminated to the impeccable service provided - sincerely hospitable staff members from top managent to each and every employer. Amazing! A place where you definitely want to return.
The town of Rethymno itself is simply enchanting with cultural and architectural influences ranging from Venetian to Ottoman empire. You can reflect the history walking around the well preserved Medieval quarters. Its charm is made of various monuments, traditional buildings and temples.
The entire old town of Rethymno is a pedestrian zone which makes wondering the picturesque narrow alleys even more relaxing. The most important monuments include the Venetian Fort, Fortezza, Rimondi Fountain and the Church of St. Francis. Enjoying the views from the Fortezza is a great way to start exploring the town.
The Venetian port with is lighthouse dating back to the Ottoman empire is worth wandering around, especially in the evenings. The area is full of life with all its cafes and restaurants. For beach lovers, the town also hosts numerous sandy beaches, on both its north and south side. Whereas for shopping maniacs, the shops are open late at night. The old town has a variety of shops from clothing and shoe stores to jewelries and art galleries.
The Cretan food is simply delicious and there is a nice variety of great restaurants in Rethymno. But there was one restaurant I ended up going three times, which is rare. The hospitable service and friendly, laid-back atmosphere of restaurant Castelo was just something to experience all over again. Also the great selection of gluten-free options was a great asset. Highly recommended!
